Genre: Network
Price: $9.99
Publish Date: August 15, 2011
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company
Seller: Hachette Book Group

Kevin Mitnick was the most elusive computer break-in artist in history. He accessed computers and networks at the world's biggest companies--and however fast the authorities were, Mitnick was faster, sprinting through phone switches, computer systems, and cellular networks. He spent years skipping through cyberspace, always three steps ahead and labeled unstoppable. But for Kevin, hacking wasn't just about technological feats-it was an old fashioned confidence game that required guile and deception to trick the unwitting out of valuable information. Driven by a powerful urge to accomplish the impossible, Mitnick bypassed security systems and blazed into major organizations including Motorola, Sun Microsystems, and Pacific Bell. But as the FBI's net began to tighten, Kevin went on the run, engaging in an increasingly sophisticated cat and mouse game that led through false identities, a host of cities, plenty of close shaves, and an ultimate showdown with the Feds, who would stop at nothing to bring him down. Ghost in the Wires is a thrilling true story of intrigue, suspense, and unbelievable escape, and a portrait of a visionary whose creativity, skills, and persistence forced the authorities to rethink the way they pursued him, inspiring ripples that brought permanent changes in the way people and companies protect their most sensitive information.

Cleverly done... ...in addition to iOS 5, Apple has launched iCloud on 12th October 2011. With just a few clicks, any user can now synchronize data on mobile devices such as iPhone or iPad with other devices or with the computer. It does not matter if you have a Mac or Windows PC. You just need to have an Apple ID. With this, you can not only shop in the stores for music, movies, books and more (AppStore, iBookStore etc), but also make use of the many services that Apple launches. These services require an Apple ID but offer a many extra features to the user. In addition to FaceTime or iMessage, this includes primarily the free service iCloud. Once the set up is complete, the data exchange takes place fully automatically via the Apple cloud. For example, if you take a photo with the iPhone camera, this will be immediately copied to the data cloud and is then available within seconds on your computer or iPad. Very simple! The data synchronisation with data from Calendars, Contacts, Bookmarks etc works just as quickly and reliably.  Using iCloud is great fun. Apple‘s cloud is very easy to set up, works reliably and keeps your different devices up to date. And the best thing is: iCloud is free, as long as you only require up to 5 GB data. If you want more, there are upgrades available at a reasonable price. In this book, we will show you how easily you can create and configure an Apple ID and how you can then activate the iCloud service and use its many functions on different devices. For data exchange between a mobile Apple device and a computer, we recommend using the free solution Dropbox, which we are also going to explain in this book. And last but not least, users who have previously been using Apple‘s MobileMe will find out how to migrate to iCloud. Have fun experimenting and enjoy reading this book!

Understand iCloud's features, get set up, and start taking advantage of the cloud! iCloud may seem simple, but astonishing complexity lurks below the surface, especially for those who have relied on Apple's Internet services for years. In this essential title from best-selling author Joe Kissell, you'll learn what hardware and software you need to set up and use iCloud successfully on Macs, iOS devices, second-generation Apple TVs, and Windows-based PCs. Whether you're starting from scratch or -- more likely -- upgrading an existing Apple ID or MobileMe account, Joe has the advice you need to get started. With setup completed, Joe explains the key aspects -- and hidden gotchas -- of iCloud's core features: iTunes in the Cloud; iTunes Match, iCloud Backup, Photo Stream, Documents in the Cloud, Find My iPhone, Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and more. For many, the prospect of moving from MobileMe is worrying. While some MobileMe services transition seamlessly to iCloud, others disappear as you upgrade, and still more will limp along through June 2012. To smooth your transition, Joe outlines what will happen to different MobileMe services, and for those that are going away -- like Gallery, iDisk-based file sharing and Web hosting, Mac-to-Mac syncing, and Backup -- he suggests alternatives. Also problematic are Apple IDs, and Joe explains how to work around problems with shared Apple IDs, non-email Apple IDs, multiple Apple IDs, MobileMe Family Pack accounts, and more.

THE BRAND GAP is the first book to present a unified theory of brand-building.  Whereas most books on branding are weighted toward either a strategic or creative approach, this book shows how both ways of thinking can unite to produce a “charismatic brand”—a brand that customers feel is essential to their lives. In an entertaining two-hour read you’ll learn: • the new definition of brand • the five essential disciplines of brand-building • how branding is changing the dynamics of competition • the three most powerful questions to ask about any brand • why collaboration is the key to brand-building • how design determines a customer’s experience • how to test brand concepts quickly and cheaply • the importance of managing brands from the inside • 220-word brand glossary From the back cover: Not since McLuhan’s THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE has a book compressed so many ideas into so few pages. Using the visual language of the boardroom, Neumeier presents the first unified theory of branding—a set of five disciplines to help companies bridge the gap between brand strategy and customer experience. Those with a grasp of branding will be inspired by the new perspectives they find here, and those who would like to understand it better will suddenly “get it.” This deceptively simple book offers everyone in the company access to “the most powerful business tool since the spreadsheet.”

We all like to think we're pretty savvy when it comes to using our Macs, and in the case of the typical Macworld reader, that's usually true. But there's a funny thing we've noticed when we talk even to veteran Mac users: There's almost always some essential stuff—basic things that would make their Mac use easier or more efficient—that they've either forgotten or never learned.  So we got some Macworld editors and contributors together and asked: What are the things that every Mac user should know how to do? Not the really basic stuff—Command-C, Command-V, and so on—but the skills and knowledge that mark you as Mac-literate. After much pondering and discussion, we came up with a list of 100 items that fit the bill. Those skills run the gamut from startup to shutdown: they include smart ways to manage files and accounts, search, and customize your Mac.  We'll bet that you already know many of them. But we'll also bet that you don't know them all. And if you can really, honestly say that you knew every one, you're a whole lot savvier than any of us.

Scott Kelby, the man who changed the ""digital darkroom"" forever with his groundbreaking, #1 bestselling, award-winning book The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers, now tackles the most important side of digital photography--how to take pro-quality shots using the same tricks today's top digital pros use (and it's easier than you'd think). This entire book is written with a brilliant premise, and here’s how Scott describes it: ""If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, 'Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, but I want the background out of focus?' I wouldn't stand there and give you a lecture about aperture, exposure, and depth of field. In real life, I'd just say, 'Get out your telephoto lens, set your f/stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.' You d say, 'OK,' and you'd get the shot. That's what this book is all about. A book of you and I shooting, and I answer the questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I've learned just like I would with a friend, without all the technical explanations and without all the techno-photo-speak."" This isn't a book of theory—it isn't full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts: this is a book of which button to push, which setting to use, when to use them, and nearly two hundred of the most closely guarded photographic ""tricks of the trade"" to get you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos with your digital camera every time you press the shutter button. Here's another thing that makes this book different: each page covers just one trick, just one single concept that makes your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you'll learn another pro setting, another pro tool, another pro trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. There's never been a book like it, and if you're tired of taking shots that look ""OK,"" and if you’re tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, ""Why don't my shots look like that?"" then this is the book for you.

Apple is leading the pack again—this time with a new ebook creation application that pushes the limits of ebook publishing. iBooks Author makes it easy for Mac users to create "multi-touch" ebooks that combine text, images, video, and interactive elements with finely tuned page layouts. iBooks Author: Publishing Your First Ebook helps you learn how to take advantage of iBooks Author's amazing feature set to create your own ebooks without a lot of trial and error experimentation. Using an illustrated, step-by-step approach, it guides you through the creation of a sample ebook with features you're sure to want in your own ebook publications. IMPORTANT NOTE: This edition of the book is in standard iBooks epub format. It was NOT created with iBooks Author. PLEASE do not rate or review this book based on the fact that it is not a multi-touch ebook. To do so is unfair and misleading. Please check the sample for this book before purchasing it. Thank you for your understanding.

Taking photos is only one step towards obtaining a successful snapshot or a photo intended to capture an unforgettable moment. In many cases, you then need to edit the photo afterwards more or less extensively before it is absolutely perfect. To create the perfect photo, you often need to crop the picture to the section you want, amend the colors if they are not quite right, change a color picture to black and white to create a specific effect, and so on. Up to now, we had to edit photos at home or in the office on the Mac or Windows PC. Editing photos on the move was possible, but previously restricted to very basic manipulations, for example rotating or cropping the picture. Thanks to the iPad we now have a device that offers a larger screen and sufficient processing power. What was lacking previously was a suitable software that can make use of this processing power and offer image editing in high quality. This software is now finally available: iPhoto has arrived on the iPad and iPhone.
